A 31-year-old American woman has rebuilt her life as a freelance journalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, after a series of personal and professional setbacks led her to abandon a traditional path to success. Her journey, which began with a one-way flight to South Korea in April 2024, involved an eight-month trip across Asia and Australia, fundamentally altering her worldview.

The catalyst was a difficult period starting in January 2023, marked by an unexpected breakup. In May 2023, she was laid off from her job coordinating large conferences and corporate travel. She subsequently took a position at a family-run wedding business, but the 90-minute commute and unfulfilling tasks led to daily emotional distress. A second layoff in late 2023, which she met with relief, provided the final push for change.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

In early 2024, she set a clear goal: to sublet her apartment, sell her belongings, and board a one-way flight to Seoul by 15 April 2024. She began her trip with a friend before venturing solo into Thailand. The initial phase was challenging, with anxiety and panic attacks in locations like Bangkok's Khao San Road and Ho Chi Minh City.

A pivotal moment came while traveling the Ha Giang Loop in Northern Vietnam by motorbike. "I realized that my idea of success was built upon a level of pressure that didn't exist up in these Vietnamese mountains," she reflected. She observed that local life centered on routine, family, and presence, rather than strict deadlines and productivity.

Finding Community in Uncertainty

Throughout Southeast Asia and Australia, she connected with travellers of diverse ages and backgrounds, many of whom were also navigating career breaks or life transitions. In the jungles of Malaysian Borneo, she met a fellow American who was also redefining her life after a breakup. They travelled together intermittently to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Bali.

This community reframed her view of travel. "It reframed my view of travel — not as a break from real life, but as an active part of it," she stated. "For the first time, uncertainty no longer felt like failure."

Building a New Life in Europe

Upon returning to the US after her Asian journey, she felt no pull toward her old life. In 2025, she embarked on a tour of 17 European countries, where she developed a deep connection with the Balkans region.

She has now settled in Sarajevo, where she is building a career as a freelance journalist. "While the life I'm creating may not match the version of success I was raised with, it's more aligned with how I want to live: flexibly, deliberately, and with purpose," she concluded.
