Boris Cherny, Chief Technology Officer at Anthropic, has outlined three core principles for his engineering team that place the company's AI assistant, Claude, at the centre of their workflow. In an interview on "Lenny's Podcast," Cherny explained that these strategies are designed to enhance speed and efficiency in the highly competitive AI market.

The first principle is the automation of tasks through Claude. "If you have Claude, you can really automate a lot of work, and that's kind of what we see over and over," Cherny stated. He confirmed host Lenny Rachitsky's observation that a guiding tenet is, "What's better than doing something? Having Claude do it."

Strategic Underfunding to Force AI Adoption

The second principle involves deliberately "underfunding things a little bit" to compel reliance on AI tools. Cherny argues this scarcity mindset fosters innovation. "There's this interesting thing when you underfund everything a little bit, because then people are kind of forced to Claude-ify," he said. This approach encourages teams to find automated solutions with Claude rather than requesting more human resources.

However, Cherny clarified that this does not mean cost-cutting on essential resources like AI access. He advised fellow CTOs: "Start by just giving engineers as many tokens as possible." Token cost, the fee for using AI models, is becoming a significant concern for companies, with some CFOs experiencing "sticker shock" at the additional expenses.

Optimising Costs After Proven Value

Cherny pushed back on the idea that this strategy would lead to excessive profits for Anthropic. He recommended that companies allow engineers to experiment freely initially, even if token usage is high. "Let's say they build something awesome, and then it takes a huge amount of tokens, and then the cost becomes pretty big," he noted. "That's the point at which you want to optimize it, but don't do that too early."

The final principle is a focus on speed, a legacy from Anthropic's early days. "Early on, it was really important because it was just me, and so our only advantage was speed," Cherny recalled. "That's the only way that we could ship a product that would compete in this very crowded coding market."

Claude as the Engine for Acceleration

This need for velocity remains central, especially given the rapid release cycles of AI companies. Recently, Anthropic and rival OpenAI released major updates to their coding tools within minutes of each other. Cherny stated that Claude is now integral to maintaining this pace, having been used to build the non-technical Claude Cowork agent in just 10 days.

"It's still very much a principle we have on the team," Cherny said of the speed imperative. "And if you want to go faster, a really good way to do that is to just have Claude do more stuff. So it just very much encourages that."
