Apple has launched a new budget-friendly iPhone, the iPhone 17e, maintaining its starting price of $599 despite industry-wide pressures on smartphone margins from a memory shortage. The device was announced on Monday alongside a new iPad Air.

The iPhone 17e introduces several key upgrades over its predecessor, including MagSafe charging, a more durable front screen, and a significantly improved camera system. It is available in black, white, and a new soft pink colour.

Enhanced Durability and Performance

The new model features the Ceramic Shield 2 front cover, matching the rest of the iPhone 17 family. Apple states this upgrade makes the screen three times more scratch-resistant than the previous iPhone 16e.

Internally, the phone is powered by Apple's latest A19 chip, providing a boost in processing power. The company has also doubled the starting storage capacity from 128GB to 256GB.

Camera and Marketing Push

On the rear, the iPhone 17e sports a 48-megapixel fusion camera capable of portrait photography and 4K video recording. Apple markets this feature as being similar to "owning two cameras in one."

"iPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our users love at an exceptional value, making it a compelling option for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 family," said Kaiann Drance, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPhone product marketing.

Strategic Timing and Broader Context

The launch follows what CEO Tim Cook described as "staggering" demand for the iPhone 17 during a historic holiday quarter, as stated in an earnings call with analysts on January 29. Although the iPhone 16e is only a year old, Apple emphasises the new model is built to last "for years to come."

The simultaneous announcement of a new iPad Air, also starting at $599 and featuring the new M4 chip, signals a week of multiple product launches from the Cupertino-based giant. Industry analysts expect further announcements in the coming days.
