A 42-year-old chef from Oklahoma has revealed how quitting alcohol led to a 100-pound weight loss, a new business venture, and a complete life transformation. Emily Susman, a cookbook author from Tulsa, had her last drink in early February 2021 after a lifetime of cultural and social drinking escalated into a dangerous dependency.
Susman, who is of Lebanese descent, explained that alcohol was a central part of her family culture from a young age. "At 14, my grandfather handed me a vodka and tonic and said, 'This is the way to drink responsibly, surrounded by your family in the safety of home,'" she recalled. Her habits intensified in college and later, while running a successful restaurant in Dallas.
The Descent into Dependency
The situation worsened significantly after she sold her business and began working with her husband, Drake Susman, 43, in his gas-and-oil brokerage. Managing the company's finances led to chronic stress, which she medicated with alcohol. "It got to the point where I was getting through a large bottle of vodka every few days," Susman admitted. She would hide the empty bottles in the pantry to conceal the frequency from her husband.
By January 2021, standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall, she weighed 230 pounds and wore a size 16. The physical toll included constant hangovers, shaking, vomiting, and weight gain from drunk-eating. Her family repeatedly expressed concern, but she would make empty promises to quit after holidays.
The Turning Point and Road to Recovery
The pivotal moment came after a particularly severe drinking episode. "I awoke from a particularly bad episode and stared at myself in the mirror... I bawled my eyes out because I was so miserable," she said. She immediately sought therapy and committed to sobriety.
Susman applied the same "all-or-nothing" mindset that fueled her alcoholism to her recovery. She celebrated milestones—five days, 30 days, 120 days—and used distractions like adult coloring books, painting, and sugar-free lollipops to manage cravings. Crucially, she returned to her culinary roots, preparing nutritious meals that broke her cycle of binge-eating and guilt.
Sustained Transformation and New Venture
Combining her new diet with simple walking and strength training, Susman lost approximately one pound per week. She now weighs 126 pounds, wears a size zero to two, and has maintained sobriety for five years. The financial savings have been substantial; using an app, she calculated saving nearly $55,500 based on her previous average daily spend of $30 on alcohol.
In 2021, the same year she became sober, Susman launched her company, Emma Claire’s Kitchen. The business offers practical recipes and sells products like spices, with plans to introduce mocktail powders. "I'm a completely different person from the wreck I saw in the mirror that terrible morning," she stated, expressing gratitude for her family's support.
Reflecting on her journey, Susman emphasised the gravity of her past situation: "It's scary to think that I nearly lost everything — including my life — to alcohol." She is now focused on a future she describes as bright and full of self-love.
