A viral social media story about an abandoned baby monkey has caused a global surge in demand for a specific Ikea soft toy. Punch, a seven-month-old Japanese macaque at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, was given a brown Djungelskog orangutan plush for comfort after being rejected by his mother and other monkeys.

Heart-wrenching videos of the infant primate clinging to the toy have amassed millions of views on TikTok, turning Punch into an online sensation. A supportive Japanese hashtag, translating to "hang in there, Punch," has trended worldwide, with viewers identifying the cuddly companion as an Ikea product.

Global Stock Depletes as Demand Spikes

Javier Quiñones, commercial manager at Ingka Group, which operates Ikea stores, confirmed to Business Insider a "clear increase in sales" of the toy, particularly in Japan, the US, and South Korea. The item has sold out in some stores in these regions, prompting the company to work on restocking.

"The toy has long been one of our most sought-after across markets, and the story from Japan is now giving it a little extra love," Quiñones stated. The plush retails for $19.99 in the United States.

Company Responds with Donation to Zoo

An Ikea spokesperson said the company's Japan team contacted the zoo to offer support. On February 17, Ikea donated several soft toys, including additional orangutan plushes, and storage items to aid Punch and enhance areas for child visitors.

"Just like the zookeepers, we sincerely hope that Punch will soon become comfortable in an environment with the other monkeys and no longer need the soft toy," the spokesperson added.

Resale Market Frenzy Follows Retail Shortage

The surge in interest has spilled onto online resale platforms. A search on eBay revealed listings for the Djungelskog orangutan with sellers asking for as much as $328—more than 16 times its original retail price. A check of Ikea's US website showed the toy was out of stock for click-and-collect or in-store purchase at most locations, with only a handful of stores reporting availability.
