Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's 63rd birthday cake, served at a private dinner in California last weekend, has delivered an unexpected and significant marketing boost to the Korean bakery brand Paris Baguette. The event highlights Huang's cult-like status in the tech industry and his hands-on approach to managing crucial supplier relationships.

The strawberry soft cream cake was provided by Paris Baguette, a chain operated by Paris Croissant, for a dinner Huang hosted on Saturday, 17 February. The guest list comprised approximately 30 engineers from South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix, a primary supplier of the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips essential for Nvidia's artificial intelligence processors.

Strategic Dinner with Key Supplier

Huang personally organised the dinner at a Santa Clara restaurant called 99 Chicken to encourage the SK Hynix engineers, according to Korean business newspaper Hankyung. During the event, the Nvidia co-founder directly appealed to the engineers, stating, "Please supply the highest-performance HBM4 without a hitch."

SK Hynix's HBM chips are a critical component in the AI hardware boom, acting as a high-speed data conduit for Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs). Shortages of these advanced memory chips have recently been a bottleneck in the AI supply chain.

For about two hours, Huang went table to table, personally preparing and serving *somaek*—a Korean cocktail of soju and beer—to his guests while expressing his gratitude.

‘A Total Boon’ for Bakery Brand

The choice of cake has been hailed as a major publicity victory for Paris Baguette, which incurred no cost for the prominent placement. A Paris Croissant official told The Korea Times the incident was "a total boon without costing us anything," emphasising the symbolic value of their product being present at the birthday of "the current leader of the global AI industry."

The cake in question is described as a vanilla sponge filled with soft cream and fresh strawberries, topped with additional berries. Paris Croissant operates around 280 Paris Baguette outlets across the United States, including several in Silicon Valley, with ambitious plans to expand to 1,000 locations in North America by 2030.

Huang’s Celebrity Status Drives Frenzy

The incident is the latest example of the intense public and media fascination surrounding Jensen Huang, whose movements often generate significant attention. In October 2024, a casual meal of fried chicken in Seoul with the heads of Samsung and Hyundai turned into a major media event, with crowds and live television broadcasts outside the restaurant.

Following that visit, Korean media reported that customers lined up for hours to dine at the same table, prompting the restaurant to impose a one-hour time limit on its use.

The brand exposure from Huang's birthday underscores the cultural cachet the Nvidia CEO now commands globally, extending his influence beyond the semiconductor industry into consumer trends. For Paris Baguette, the incident provides invaluable organic marketing as it pursues aggressive international expansion, particularly in the competitive North American market.
