A passenger's simple act of kindness in a business-class cabin resulted in a memorable flight sitting near actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key. The incident occurred in February on a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to San Francisco.
Denny Balmaceda, who works in the fashion industry, was travelling on a ticket booked by a client. As he settled into his window seat in row 11, an unidentified woman asked if he would switch seats so she could sit next to her husband.
A Celebrity Encounter
Balmaceda agreed immediately, noting that in business class, "all the seats are good." It was then he realised the woman's husband was Keegan-Michael Key, star of "Key & Peele" and other film and television projects. "He's literally one of my favourite actors," Balmaceda stated.
He moved to the woman's seat in row 10, directly in front of the couple. Key's wife later informed Balmaceda that the actor would be happy to take a photo with him, which he did. Balmaceda described Key as "so nice" and "a real gentleman" throughout the journey.
Impression of a "Real Person"
According to Balmaceda's account, Key was consistently gracious with every passenger who approached him during the flight, engaging in conversation and posing for pictures without appearing annoyed. "There was no sense that he thought he was above anyone on that plane," Balmaceda observed. "He was just a real person who happened to be a celebrity."
Balmaceda, familiar with celebrity behaviour through his fashion industry work, contrasted this experience, noting some celebrities can be rude or simply desire anonymity. Key's demeanour, he said, did not fit those categories. The actor even assisted Balmaceda by retrieving his bag from the overhead compartment as the flight ended.
A One-in-a-Million Chance
Before disembarking, Balmaceda took several photos with Key to show his wife. He characterised the entire experience, from the business-class upgrade to the celebrity meeting, as a "one-in-a-million chance" that left him "very happy and surprised."
