Three American service members have been killed and five seriously wounded during combat operations against Iran, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday. This marks the first official acknowledgement of US fatalities since American forces began conducting strikes alongside Israel against Iranian targets on Saturday.
In a statement, CENTCOM, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, confirmed the casualties. "Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions — and are in the process of being returned to duty," the command added.
Identities Withheld, Operations Continue
"The situation is fluid, so out of respect for the families, we will withhold additional information, including the identities of our fallen warriors, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified," CENTCOM stated. The command emphasised that combat operations in the region will continue despite the losses.
President Trump's Warning
In a video address to the nation on Saturday, President Donald Trump had warned that the conflict with Iran could result in American casualties. "The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties. That often happens in war," Trump said. He framed the mission as a necessary sacrifice for future security, stating, "But we're doing this — not for now — we're doing this for the future, and it is a noble mission."
The announcement confirms the direct human cost of the escalating military engagement between the US-led coalition and Iran, which began with coordinated strikes less than 48 hours prior. The conflict represents a significant escalation of long-standing tensions in the Middle East.
