OpenAI has revealed that nearly half of all ChatGPT usage in India comes from users aged 18 to 24, highlighting the AI tool's significant penetration among the country's youth. The company stated that users under 30 collectively account for a striking 80% of messages sent within the Indian market.

According to data released by the AI lab on Friday, Indian users primarily employ ChatGPT for professional purposes. Some 35% of all messages from India relate to work tasks, a figure that is higher than the global average of 30%.

Coding Assistant Sees Explosive Growth

The company's coding assistant, Codex, is experiencing particularly strong traction. OpenAI reported that Indian users utilise Codex three times more than the global median. Weekly usage of the tool has quadrupled since the launch of its dedicated Mac application just two weeks ago.

Users in India are also asking three times as many coding-related questions as the global median, a finding consistent with research from rival AI firm Anthropic. Earlier this week, Anthropic reported that 45.2% of tasks performed on its Claude AI model in India map to software-related use cases.

Beyond Work: Guidance and Information

Outside of professional tasks, the breakdown of Indian user requests shows a diverse range of applications. Some 35% of messages to ChatGPT from India request guidance, while 20% concern general information queries. A further 20% of messages are requests for the AI to produce or assist with writing tasks.

India stands as OpenAI's second-largest market globally, boasting over 100 million weekly users. The company has actively courted the Indian market with strategies including a subscription tier priced below $5 and promotional campaigns run last year to spur adoption.

Expansion and Major Partnerships

"AI adoption is moving faster than our ability to measure it – and that’s a challenge for anyone trying to make smart decisions. Signals is our way of putting real-world evidence on the table, so India’s AI debate can be grounded in facts, not hype," said OpenAI's chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji, in a statement.

The announcement coincides with a major AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. As part of its expansion, OpenAI is opening new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru this year.

The company has also signed a landmark partnership with the Tata Group, securing 100 megawatts of AI compute capacity and agreeing to distribute ChatGPT Enterprise within Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the conglomerate's IT services subsidiary.

Further commercial agreements have been established with Indian fintech firm Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and Makemytrip, and food delivery company Eternal. In the education sector, OpenAI has partnered with institutes to distribute its tools to more than 100,000 students over the next six years.
