Anthropic has informed subscribers of its Claude Code service that they will face additional charges to use the AI coding assistant with third-party tools, beginning with OpenClaw. The policy change, effective from noon Pacific Time on April 4, 2026, means subscription limits can no longer be applied to external "harnesses," requiring a separate pay-as-you-go billing model.

The company stated the new rule "applies to all third-party harnesses and will be rolled out to more shortly." The announcement follows the recent move of OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger to rival OpenAI, with OpenClaw continuing as an open-source project supported by his new employer.

Engineering Constraints Cited

In a public statement on X, Boris Cherny, Anthropic's head of Claude Code, explained the decision. "Our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools," he wrote, adding the company is trying "to be intentional in managing our growth to continue to serve our customers sustainably long-term."

Cherny insisted the move was "more about engineering constraints" than opposition to open source, noting he had recently submitted pull requests to improve OpenClaw. He confirmed Anthropic is offering full refunds to affected subscribers who were unaware the service was unsupported.

Timing Coincides with Rivalry

The policy shift has sparked controversy regarding its timing. Peter Steinberger revealed he and OpenClaw board member Dave Morin had attempted to negotiate with Anthropic, succeeding only in delaying the increased pricing by one week. "Funny how timings match up, first they copy some popular features into their closed harness, then they lock out open source," Steinberger commented.

This development occurs amidst strategic shifts in the competitive AI landscape. OpenAI recently shut down its Sora video generation models, reportedly to reallocate computing resources and refocus on attracting software engineers and enterprise clients—a core market for products like Claude Code.
