OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has confirmed a significant reshuffle of its senior leadership team. The changes see its long-serving Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, move to a new role, while two other senior executives are stepping back temporarily for health-related reasons.
The company confirmed to Business Insider that Brad Lightcap, COO since 2020, is transitioning to a new position focused on special projects. According to an internal memo, Lightcap will now report directly to CEO Sam Altman and will concentrate on expanding OpenAI's enterprise software sales through partnerships with private equity firms.
Denise Dresser, who was recently appointed as OpenAI's Chief Revenue Officer, will assume some of the operational responsibilities previously held by Lightcap.
Senior Leaders Take Medical Leave
In a separate development, the company confirmed that two other senior executives are taking temporary leave. Fidji Simo, the CEO of Applications at OpenAI, is taking a medical leave to pursue treatment for a neuroimmune condition. The internal memo states she is expected to return to her role in several weeks.
Separately, Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch announced on social media platform X that she is stepping down to focus on her recovery from cancer. In her post, Rouch indicated she would consider returning to the company in a different capacity if her health permits. "Courage isn't always pushing harder," she wrote. "Sometimes it's choosing your health, your family, and being around for the long run."
Context of Executive Turnover
Executive changes are not unprecedented at OpenAI. The company experienced a period of major instability in late 2023 when CEO Sam Altman was briefly removed by the board, leading to a wave of high-profile departures, primarily among the original board members who had orchestrated his ousting.
More recently, in 2025, a group of approximately half a dozen AI researchers departed OpenAI to join Meta's Superintelligence Labs. An OpenAI spokesperson emphasised the company's current stability, stating: "We have a strong leadership team focused on our biggest priorities: advancing frontier research, growing our global user base of nearly 1 billion users, and powering enterprise use cases. We're well-positioned to keep executing with continuity and momentum."
OpenAI's Pivotal Period
The leadership adjustments come during a critical phase for OpenAI. The company is reportedly preparing for a potential initial public offering (IPO) and recently completed a funding round, raising $122 billion at a valuation of $852 billion. It is actively exploring new revenue streams, including testing advertising within its flagship ChatGPT product, while simultaneously navigating intensifying competition from rivals such as Anthropic.
