A brother and sister who have spent most of their adult lives living on separate continents have reconnected during an intensive multi-day trek through the mountains of Ecuador. Fergus, 40, from Canada, visited his sister, a freelance writer who has lived in South America for eight years, in January for their most significant time together as adults.

The siblings, two of four, planned a 26-mile (approximately 42-kilometre) walk through sleepy farming towns outside Quito to properly catch up. The journey, traversing dirt roads, green peaks, and deep gorges, served as a belated celebration for Fergus's 40th birthday, which his sister had missed while living abroad.

A Trek to Bridge the Distance

With no mobile signal and few people around, the pair used the uninterrupted time to talk about "everything," from future plans and family news to nearly forgotten childhood memories. "I'm so glad you finally made it," the sister told her brother as they rested by a river, a sentiment underscoring the trip's purpose of making up for lost time and missed milestones.

The siblings' parallel lives have seen them chasing similar adventures but rarely in the same place. After Fergus left home in 2009, he travelled globally before moving to Australia in 2016. When he returned to Canada in 2018, his sister departed for Colombia, eventually settling in Ecuador.

Recognising a Lifelong Bond

Despite the geographical distance, they remained close, bonded by shared traits of being athletic, adventurous, and drawn to similar places. The trek, however, presented familiar familial dynamics. During a challenging climb near the journey's end, the sister recognised her own occasional impatience mirrored in her brother's insistence to push forward.

This moment of reflection culminated by a turquoise lagoon, where she saw him not just as an older sibling but as "someone I'll rely on for decades." The unconventional trip concluded fittingly with an impromptu ride in the back of a moving truck after their scheduled bus failed to arrive, a final shared adventure.
