Starbucks has launched a new application within the ChatGPT ecosystem that uses artificial intelligence to generate personalised coffee orders based on a customer's described "vibe", a photo, or other prompts. The feature, announced on Wednesday, represents one of the retailer's most significant public-facing bets on AI technology to date.
Users can input a text prompt—such as a desire for protein or sugar-free options, a description of a sunset, or the need to alter their workday mood—and receive a bespoke drink recommendation. The AI-generated suggestion can then be customised with additions like cold foam or matcha powder. After selecting a location via ChatGPT, the order is completed through the standard Starbucks app or website.
Meeting Customers in the 'Moment of Inspiration'
Paul Riedel, Senior Vice President of Digital & Loyalty at Starbucks, stated the move addresses a shift in how customers begin their ordering journey. "Over the past year, one thing has become clear: customers aren't always starting with a menu. They're starting with a feeling," Riedel said. "We wanted to meet customers right in that moment of inspiration and make it easier than ever to find a drink that fits."
He added that the beta technology is intended to make customers "more excited" about their beverage choice and framed it as a learning opportunity for the company. "As a beta experience, it's also an opportunity for us to listen, learn, and refine as we go," Riedel said.
Part of a Broader Shift to 'Agentic Commerce'
The Starbucks app reflects a wider industry trend where major retailers integrate AI chatbots not just for product discovery but to facilitate direct purchases—a practice termed "agentic commerce". Other brands like Walmart and Target have partnered with OpenAI for similar integrations.
In the food and beverage sector, delivery platforms DoorDash and Uber Eats have ChatGPT apps that convert recipes into shoppable lists and help place orders. Fast-food chains, including Burger King and Firehouse Subs, also use the technology to show locations and promote deals.
Starbucks's Expanding AI Portfolio
This consumer-facing app follows Starbucks's other AI initiatives aimed at operations. In June 2025, the company announced Green Dot Assist, an AI-powered virtual assistant for baristas powered by Microsoft Azure's OpenAI platform. Initially piloted at 35 locations, it is being rolled out more widely this year.
Together, these rollouts signal the accelerating integration of AI into routine consumer decisions, transforming even the simple act of ordering a coffee.
