Amazon MGM Studios has achieved a major box office milestone, with its film "Project Hail Mary" becoming the company's highest-grossing movie ever. The science fiction adaptation has surpassed the previous record holder, "Creed III", after just ten days in theatres.

The film, based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, reportedly had a production budget of around $200 million. This represents a significant financial gamble for a movie that is neither a sequel nor part of an established franchise.

Unconventional Story, Record-Breaking Results

In its first ten days of release, "Project Hail Mary" has generated an estimated $164.3 million in North America and $136.2 million overseas, bringing its global total to over $300 million. Domestically, the film's box office revenue fell only 32% in its second weekend, a strong hold that suggests its final earnings will be substantially higher.

The film's success is notable for its unconventional narrative. For extended periods, Ryan Gosling is the only human actor on screen, portraying a scientist who collaborates with a rock-like alien to solve a cosmic mystery threatening Earth's sun.

A Validation of Amazon's Cinematic Strategy

Amazon's head of film, Courtenay Valenti, told The New York Times that the film's performance validates the studio's strategy of producing "big, bold entertaining commercial films." This marks an evolution from the company's earlier focus on distributing smaller, critically acclaimed titles like "The Big Sick" and "Manchester by the Sea".

The acquisition of the historic MGM studio and a public commitment to release 14 films in cinemas annually signalled Amazon's heightened theatrical ambitions. However, recent releases like "After the Hunt", "Mercy", and the "Melania" documentary had struggled to connect with audiences until "Project Hail Mary".

What Comes Next for Amazon MGM

The success positions "Project Hail Mary" as the biggest box office hit of 2026 so far and one of the most successful non-franchise films of the past decade. It provides significant momentum for Amazon MGM's upcoming slate.

The studio is preparing to release "The Sheep Detectives", starring Hugh Jackman, in May, followed by a reboot of "Masters of the Universe" in June.
