Delta Air Lines has announced its next-generation Delta One business class suite, complete with sliding doors, for its future fleet of Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The airline has 20 of the widebody jets on order, with the first delivery expected in early 2027. The move is part of a broader strategy to standardise its premium cabins and meet booming demand for enhanced in-flight privacy and comfort.

The new seat, called the VantageNOVA, is manufactured by Northern Ireland-based Thompson Aero Seating, with Delta as the launch customer. It is an evolution of the Vantage XL platform used for the airline's current suite product. Delta stated that nearly half of the cabin on the new A350-1000s will be dedicated to business class or its Premium Select premium economy section.

Fleet-Wide Premium Upgrade

The airline's investment extends beyond new aircraft. Delta also plans to retrofit its existing fleet of older Airbus A330-200 and -300 aircraft, which have an average age of about 20 years, with the new suite cabins. This initiative aims to "reduce product fragmentation and deliver a more consistent experience across fleets," according to the carrier. The goal is for 90% of all Delta One seats to be configured as enclosed suites by 2030.

Delta's older Boeing 767s, however, will not receive doors and are scheduled to be phased out by the end of the decade. The airline's rivals, United Airlines and American Airlines, have similarly introduced pod-style business class on new aircraft, though Delta has featured suite doors since 2017.

Design and Passenger Experience

The new cabin adopts darker, natural tones and wood-like finishes, moving away from the previous red, white, and blue colour scheme. Delta said the design is based on customer and employee feedback, reflecting a more high-end appeal to attract deep-pocketed travellers.

The VantageNOVA suite is designed to be lighter and feel more spacious than its predecessor. It features slimmer doors to expand the living footprint, with every passenger having direct aisle access. When the doors are closed and the seat is in a fully lie-flat bed position, it creates a private pod. A dedicated self-service refreshment station with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks will be available for Delta One passengers on both the A350-1000 and retrofitted A330s.

Enhanced Technology and Amenities

A key technological upgrade is the introduction of widespread Bluetooth connectivity for personal audio devices on the premium seats, eliminating the need for wired headphones. This will be paired with a larger 24-inch 4K QLED television screen. United Airlines recently announced a similar feature for its new Boeing 787 business class.

Other amenities in the new suite will include noise-cancelling headphones, USB ports, a wireless phone charger, a shoe cubby, and a built-in holder for personal electronic devices. The memory foam cushioning used in the seats is also being extended to the upgraded Premium Select and main cabin seats.

Economy Cabin Improvements

Passengers in Delta's Main Cabin and Delta Comfort+ on both the new A350-1000 and refurbished A330 aircraft will benefit from an extra inch of legroom. All economy seats will receive larger 13-inch screens with 4K QLED displays, improved cushioning, and Bluetooth connectivity, alongside a darker colour palette.

Delta confirmed that the A330 retrofits will be conducted during scheduled maintenance periods to avoid taking aircraft out of service for extended times. The airline continues to chase premium demand as the industry recovers from the pandemic, with a clear focus on product consistency and technological advancement.
