Google has launched the Pixel 10a, a budget smartphone that marks a significant departure from industry trends by featuring a completely flat back with no protruding camera module. The device, priced at $499, retains the core camera hardware from its predecessor but packages it within a new, sleeker design that lies flush on surfaces.
The 6.3-inch display now reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, a notable upgrade for outdoor visibility, and supports a 120Hz refresh rate, though it ships set to 60Hz. Powering the device is a 5,100 mAh battery, which is larger than the unit in the standard Pixel 10, supported by 30W wired and 10W wireless charging.
Performance and AI Compromises
Under the hood, the Pixel 10a is equipped with the Google Tensor G4 chip and 8GB of RAM, the same combination used in last year's Pixel 9a. This hardware configuration means it cannot run the updated Gemini Nano AI model, locking it out of several advanced on-device AI features available on the more expensive Pixel 10 series.
These excluded features include AI-powered notification summaries, the Pixel screenshot app, the Magi Cue suggestion engine, automated call notes, and on-device call translation. Google has indicated that some AI capabilities may arrive later via software updates known as Pixel Drops.
Camera Capabilities and Competition
The dual-camera system consists of a 48-megapixel main sensor and a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens, identical to the Pixel 9a. While the main camera performs well in various lighting conditions, the ultrawide sensor lacks autofocus and can lose detail. New AI-assisted features include a camera coach for framing guidance and Auto Best Take for selecting optimal group photos.
The device faces stiff competition, notably from the Nothing 4a Pro, which also retails for $499 but offers a brighter screen, a more powerful Qualcomm processor, a telephoto lens, and 50W charging. Google supports the Pixel 10a with a commitment to seven years of software and security updates.
Design and Build Details
Constructed with a plastic back and Corning Gorilla Glass 7i on the front, the Pixel 10a forgoes the premium materials of the Pixel 10 but maintains a robust build. It is available in colours including Lavender, Berry, Fog, and black. A new quick share feature also enables seamless file transfers with Apple devices using a technology compatible with AirDrop.
For consumers, the choice hinges on valuing the flat design, reliable battery life, and Google's update promise against the more powerful specifications offered by competitors at the same price point.
