Instacart, the North American grocery delivery and technology company, has acquired Colombia-based retail technology firm Instaleap, the company announced on Tuesday. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition marks a significant strategic shift for Instacart, enabling its first major foray into markets outside the United States and Canada. Instaleap will initially operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
Expanding Through Enterprise Technology
Founded in 2019, Instaleap provides a global fulfilment solutions platform that helps retailers streamline and scale their online grocery operations. The company has established a client base across nearly 30 countries in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.
This move allows Instacart to pursue an "enterprise-led strategy" for international growth. Instead of launching its consumer-facing delivery app in new regions, Instacart will leverage Instaleap's existing retail partnerships and technology to sell its backend commerce and advertising software.
A Broader Platform Ambition
Instacart's commerce platform, Storefront Pro, already powers the e-commerce operations of more than 380 grocers, including major chains like Aldi, Costco, Publix, and Sprouts. Its Carrot Ads platform serves over 310 retailers.
"We see a meaningful opportunity to expand internationally through an enterprise-led strategy that empowers retailers across the globe to meet the evolving omnichannel needs of their customers," said Ryan Hamburger, Chief Commercial Officer at Instacart.
Leadership and Future Integration
Instaleap's co-founder and CEO, Antonio dos Santos Nunes, stated the partnership would help scale the company's impact. "Joining Instacart enables us to scale our impact with the support of a trusted partner that shares our commitment to retailer success," Nunes said in a press release.
Instacart plans to gradually integrate more of its own enterprise technology, such as its advertising and data insights tools, into the Instaleap platform for its international retail partners over time.
