Spotify has officially launched a new feature enabling users in the United States and the United Kingdom to purchase physical books through its app. The move, which began rolling out this week, marks the streaming service's first foray into the sale of tangible goods and represents a significant expansion of its audiobook ecosystem.

The capability is powered by a collaboration with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace that supports independent bookstores. On relevant audiobook pages within the Spotify app, a new "Get a copy for your bookshelf" button now appears, redirecting customers to Bookshop.org's website to complete the transaction, including pricing, inventory management, and shipping.

Currently, the feature is available exclusively to users on Android devices. Spotify has confirmed that access for iOS users will be rolled out starting next week.

Strategic Shift Towards a Comprehensive Book Platform

This launch cements Spotify's ambition to become a major competitor in the bookselling market and a one-stop destination for book enthusiasts. The initiative is part of a broader corporate strategy focused on improving profitability. In pursuit of this goal, Spotify has recently implemented subscription price increases in both the U.S. and European markets.

The company recently announced it had reached 751 million monthly active listeners globally. Alongside physical book sales, Spotify has concurrently rolled out several other updates to its audiobook features, which were first previewed in February.

Enhanced Audiobook Features Roll Out Globally

A key update is the expansion of the "Page Match" feature, which now supports over 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. Page Match allows a user to scan a page from a physical book or e-book using their smartphone camera; the tool then analyses the text and directs the user to the corresponding section within the Spotify audiobook.

Since its initial launch for English-language books in February, Spotify reports that users who utilise Page Match stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours per week compared to other listeners. Furthermore, 62% of Page Matched audiobook titles on the platform are books those users had never previously streamed.

New Tools for Discovery and Continuity

Other new features include the official launch of "Audiobook Recaps" on Android. This function provides brief audio summaries tailored to the user's most recent stopping point in a story, designed to make it easier to resume listening.

Spotify also announced that "Audiobook Charts," similar to its existing music and podcast charts, are now available in Germany. This feature, which highlights popular and trending titles on the platform to aid discovery, had previously been rolled out in the U.S. and the U.K.
