Building a diverse technology company requires intentional action from the very first hire and is fundamentally linked to the diversity of venture capital investors, according to Leah Solivan, founder of Taskrabbit and managing director of Precedent.VC. In an interview on the Build Mode podcast, Solivan detailed the systematic approach her company took to recruit diverse talent as it scaled from a bootstrapped startup to a gig economy leader.
She argued that a founder's initial network, often homogenous, dictates early hiring, making proactive sourcing essential. "Diversity doesnât happen by accident," Solivan stated. The leadership team at Taskrabbit embedded diversity into every aspect of their recruiting process to build a self-sustaining, diverse ecosystem from the outset.
The Funding Pipeline's Role
Solivan connected company-level diversity to the broader investment landscape, highlighting a systemic bottleneck. "If you follow the money through the system, it comes from limited partners... The money is there, but itâs being controlled by people that have different biases," she explained. This flow of capital from LPs to VCs and then to founders significantly shapes which ideas and teams get funded and scaled.
She emphasised that neither founders nor their investors need to be from underrepresented groups to implement effective diversity strategies. Solivan advocates for practical measures such as mandating that two female candidates be interviewed for every male candidate, tapping into non-traditional talent networks, and promoting individuals from varied backgrounds into leadership positions.
Building a Safety Net for Change
Describing the challenge of breaking established hiring patterns, Solivan used a powerful analogy: âYouâre asking someone to walk off the edge of a cliff â letâs build a net for them to jump into.â This "net" consists of structured processes, clear goals, and accountability that make diversifying a team a manageable and integrated business practice rather than an aspirational add-on.
The discussion aired as part of TechCrunch's content promoting its upcoming StrictlyVC event in San Francisco on April 30 and Disrupt 2026 in October. The Build Mode podcast, hosted by Isabelle Johannessen and produced by Maggie Nye, releases new episodes every Thursday, focusing on founder insights and startup growth strategies.
