Longtime venture capitalist Ron Conway announced on Friday that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. In a post on the social media platform X, the founder of SV Angel stated he will be stepping back from some of his usual activities to prioritise his health.
Conway, a legendary figure in Silicon Valley known for early investments in companies like Google and PayPal, emphasised that his firm's operations will remain "unchanged." He credited his son, Topher Conway, with having made all of SV Angel's investment decisions "for the better part of the last decade."
Leadership Transition and Continued Focus
In his statement, Conway outlined a clear succession plan. He confirmed that Topher Conway will continue to lead the firm's investment strategy. Furthermore, he noted that another son, Ronny Conway, joined SV Angel as a managing partner in 2024.
"They bring experience from nearly every major technology cycle in Silicon Valley and are now focused on partnering with founders building the future of AI," Conway wrote about his sons.
Treatment and Outlook
While choosing not to disclose the specific type of cancer to avoid public speculation about his prognosis, Conway struck an optimistic tone. "I am fortunate to have the best/amazing team of UCSF doctors in San Francisco, and as you know, I never back down from a fight," he stated.
He assured the startup community that he will "continue to support" founders backed by SV Angel, particularly those at critical inflection points. Conway explained his intention is to maintain a "more focused and balanced schedule" that allows him to manage treatments while staying engaged with the portfolio.
Context and Legacy
Ron Conway and SV Angel have been pivotal in shaping the modern tech landscape, providing seed funding and mentorship to hundreds of startups over several decades. His diagnosis marks a significant moment for the venture capital community, where he is widely regarded as a foundational and supportive figure.
The firm's shift towards an AI-focused investment thesis under the next generation of leadership reflects the current dominant trend in technology venture capital.
