OpenAI, the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company, has acquired TBPN, a viral tech talk show popular with Silicon Valley insiders. The company announced the acquisition on Thursday, though financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move marks an unexpected foray into the media industry for the AI giant and forms part of a new communications strategy. Fidji Simo, CEO of AGI Deployment at OpenAI, stated that the standard corporate communications playbook "just doesn't apply" to the company.

Acquisition Details and Strategic Rationale

TBPN, which stands for Technology Business Programming Network, is a two-man talk show hosted by Jordi Hays and John Coogan. It streams every weekday and has gained a reputation as essential viewing in tech circles, featuring interviews with leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Palantir CEO Alex Karp. The show is known for its lighter, highly online tone, which has included framing the AI talent wars as professional sports drafts.

"The TBPN team has built something special," said Fidji Simo in a statement. "It's a real-time window into what's happening in AI. It brings together the people building the technology with leaders across every industry, figuring out how to use it for work and everyday life."

Simo added that the acquisition brings OpenAI "a team with strong editorial instincts, deep audience understanding, and a proven ability to convene influential voices across tech, business, and culture." TBPN will become part of OpenAI's Strategy organisation, reporting directly to the company's chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane.

Maintaining Editorial Independence

OpenAI has stated it will keep TBPN operationally independent, with the show retaining control over its own programming, guest selection, and editorial decisions. Co-host John Coogan emphasised on Thursday's show that TBPN has "never considered itself a journalistic outlet," but rather a platform for industry leaders to discuss and contextualise technology. "We were never in the scoop industry," Coogan remarked.

Despite the show's history of criticising the tech industry, co-host Jordi Hays said that after engaging with Altman and OpenAI, their openness to feedback was a standout quality. "This is not an April Fool's joke; that was yesterday," Coogan joked during the announcement broadcast.

Broader Industry Trend

The acquisition reflects a wider trend of dominant AI companies expanding into branding and content creation to shape their narratives. For instance, rival firm Anthropic has recently begun selling merchandise and significantly expanded its communications team over the past year.

OpenAI's purchase of TBPN provides the company with a more direct and influential channel to participate in the online conversation about artificial intelligence, its development, and its societal impact.
